Why take out business insurance as a bakery owner?
Here is why dedicated bakery insurance matters:
Your products: a mislabelled allergen, something in a loaf that shouldn't be there, or a batch that's gone off can make a customer ill. If they hold you responsible, we cover the compensation and the cost of defending you.
Your premises: A customer slips on a wet floor, or trips at the counter. If they're hurt on your premises and hold you responsible, we cover the claim.
Your staff: if you employ bakers or counter staff, optional employers' liability covers your liability as an employer, with a limit of €13 million per claim.

What is public liability insurance?
If a third party, like a customer or a member of the public, holds you responsible for an injury or for damage to their property, public liability insurance takes care of your defence costs and any compensation due.
What does it cover?
Injury or property damage caused to others in the course of your bakery work, including claims arising from the food you sell. You choose a cover limit of €1.25 million, €2.5 million or €6.5 million per claim. Optional cover can be added: employers' liability (€13 million per claim) if you have staff, and third-party objects and sites (€5,000 per claim) for damage to premises or items in your care.
Cover that fits your profession
You describe your activities fully at sign-up, and your cover matches what you actually do: baking and selling bread, cakes and pastries, serving customers in the shop, and the drinks and groceries you sell alongside them.
Is it mandatory?
Public liability isn't required by law in Ireland. However, many landlords, shopping centres, market organisers and local-authority permits often require proof of cover before you can trade. Cover starts from €7.55 per month.
Who needs it?
Any bakery that serves the public: a shopfront bakery, a pâtisserie, or a home baker selling what they make.

What does our insurance cover for bakeries?
Our cover for bakeries is built around public liability, with optional cover you can add to match your situation.
Public liability: responds if a customer or another third party suffers an injury, or their property is damaged, in the course of your work, including claims arising from the food and drink you sell. It takes care of your defence costs and any compensation due. You choose a cover limit of €1.25 million, €2.5 million or €6.5 million per claim.
Employers' liability (optional): if you employ bakers, counter staff or apprentices, this covers your liability as an employer, with a limit of €13 million per claim.
Third-party objects and sites (optional): covers damage to premises or items belonging to someone else while they are in your care, up to €5,000 per claim.
What you pay towards a claim: your excess. If your turnover is up to €500,000, you can choose €0, €250, €500, €1,000 or €2,500. Above that the options are €500, €1,000 or €2,500.

Claim examples for bakeries
Several customers fall ill after eating pastries containing an undeclared allergen, and they hold your bakery responsible for the compensation and the medical costs.
A customer slips on a freshly washed floor by the counter and fractures a wrist, and claims against you for the injury and lost earnings.
An oven fault starts a fire overnight that spreads into the unit next door, and your neighbour claims against you for the damage to their property.

How to choose the right insurance as a bakery owner?
Choosing well means weighing up a handful of things that matter more in food than they do elsewhere.
Criteria to compare:
The cover offered: match it to how you actually trade. Baking, selling in the shop, supplying other businesses and trading at markets are different risks, and every one of them needs to be declared. Damage cover concerns property belonging to other people, such as a neighbouring unit or a venue you sell in.
The price: compare premiums, but read what sits behind an unusually low one. A cheap policy that excludes part of how you trade is not cheap.
The excess: know what stays at your own expense when a claim happens, because it changes both your premium and what a small claim is actually worth to you.
The exclusions: watch for activities you never declared, a product line that has quietly changed, and any claim you already knew about before you took cover.
The service: choose an insurer you can reach and that knows food businesses. At Insify, our online support team knows the specifics of your work.
Mistakes to avoid: do not settle for a generic business policy that was never written with an oven and a shop counter in mind, and do not leave a side of the business undeclared because it only started recently. To secure your business today, discover our public liability insurance.

Answers to your questions about our insurance for bakeries
Public liability cover for a bakery starts from €7.55 per month with Insify. What you actually pay depends on your turnover, how you sell, how many people you employ, and the cover limit and excess you choose. A one-person home bakery will not pay the same as a shopfront bakery with staff and a wholesale line. You can see your own price online in a few minutes, and adjust the cover limit and excess to see how each one moves the premium.
Public liability insurance isn't required by law in Ireland. What happens in practice is different: the people you deal with commercially usually insist on it. A landlord letting you a unit, a shopping centre, a market organiser and a local authority granting a permit will all typically ask for proof of cover first. Having cover in place also means you are not personally exposed if a customer claims against you after an injury.
Your cover is built around the activities you declare. Sales of food and beverages is one of the activities included, and your cover extends to the use of land, buildings or premises for your insured activity, as well as business trips. The important thing is to declare how you sell when you take out the policy: the shop, market stalls, fairs or supplying other businesses. If you add a new way of selling after you have bought your cover, tell us, so the policy keeps matching your real situation.
If you sell what you bake, you carry the same liability as any other food business: a customer who becomes ill or is injured can hold you responsible, however small your operation. Many market organisers and retail buyers also ask home bakers for proof of public liability cover before they will deal with you.
The excess is the part of a claim you pay yourself. If a claim settles at €4,000 and your excess is €500, you pay €500 and Insify pays €3,500. If your turnover is up to €500,000, you can choose €0, €250, €500, €1,000 or €2,500. Above that the options are €500, €1,000 or €2,500. A higher excess usually lowers your monthly premium, but it leaves more out of pocket when something happens. A lower excess costs a little more each month and limits surprises.
If a customer suffers an injury, such as food poisoning or an allergic reaction, and holds you legally responsible, public liability responds to the claim: it takes care of your defence costs and any compensation due. Clear allergen labelling, batch records and supplier checks remain your first line of defence, and they make a claim much easier to handle.
Your liability as an employer is covered by employers' liability, which you can add as an optional cover with a limit of €13 million per claim.
No. Public liability covers injury and damage you cause to other people and their property, not damage to things you own. Cover for your own ovens, mixers, display counters and stock is not part of what Insify offers in Ireland today, so you would need to arrange that separately. What you can add is third-party objects and sites cover, for damage to premises or items belonging to someone else while they are in your care, up to €5,000 per claim.
