Why take out business insurance as a dance teacher?
Teaching dance puts your liability on the line in every class. Here is why cover built for the work matters:
A student is injured in class. A lift that goes wrong, or a step progressed too quickly.
Someone other than a student is hurt. A parent waiting at the side of the room, or a younger sibling underfoot.
You damage a room or equipment that isn't yours. A studio, a community hall, a school, a rented room. That's the optional third-party objects and sites cover, up to €5,000 per claim.
Public liability covers what you owe them, up to your cover limit. And whether you teach in a studio, a hall or a school, your cover follows the activities you declare when you get your quote.

What is public liability insurance?
How does it work? If a student, a parent or a member of the public holds you responsible for injuring them or damaging their property, public liability insurance covers what you owe them, up to your cover limit.
What does it cover? Injury or property damage caused to others in the course of your teaching. You choose a cover limit of €1.25 million, €2.5 million or €6.5 million per claim. Employers' liability (€13 million per claim) can be added if you have staff, and third-party objects and sites covers damage to equipment or premises of others in your care, up to €5,000 per claim.
Cover that fits your profession: You describe your activities fully at sign-up, and your cover matches what you actually do: individual and group classes, technical skill development, and conditioning work.
Your excess: The amount you pay yourself towards a claim. The options are €0, €250, €500, €1,000 and €2,500, with €0 and €250 available up to €500,000 annual revenue. Above that the minimum is €500.
Is it mandatory? Public liability isn't required by law in Ireland. However, many studios, schools, community halls, local authorities and event organisers require proof of cover before you can teach or hire a space. Cover starts from €7.55 per month.
Who needs it? Any dance teacher working with students in person, in a studio, a hall, a school or a client's own space.

What is professional indemnity insurance?
Professional indemnity covers the financial loss a client suffers because of a mistake in your work: wrong advice, a missed detail, or an error in something you delivered. It doesn't cover injury or damage to property, which is public liability.
What counts as a professional mistake? Entering a student for the wrong grade or missing an exam entry deadline, so the fee is lost and a year's preparation goes to waste. A choreography commission that can't be used. Advice a parent paid for and acted on.
Who is it for? Dance teachers whose students and their parents pay for preparation, assessment and advice, not just class time.
How does the cover respond? On a claims-made basis, which means the claim has to be made and reported to us while your policy is running.
Switching to us from another insurer? Work from up to 5 years back is covered, provided your previous policy would have covered the claim.
Leaving? Claims about work done while you were insured must be reported before your policy ends, unless run-off cover is arranged.
Cover that fits your profession: You select your activities when you apply, so the policy and its exclusions match what you actually advise on and deliver. Keep in mind that promising or guaranteeing results is excluded. You choose a cover limit from €125,000 up to €1.25 million per claim, and up to twice that per insurance year. Cover starts from €10.80 per month.

What does our insurance cover for dance teachers?
Cover for dance teachers starts with public liability, and you can add options to match your situation.
Public liability: covers what you owe if a student or another third party is injured, or their property is damaged, in the course of your teaching. You choose a cover limit of €1.25 million, €2.5 million or €6.5 million per claim, and up to twice that per insurance year.
Professional indemnity: covers the financial loss a client suffers because of a mistake in your work. Cover limits from €125,000 to €1.25 million per claim, and up to twice that per insurance year.
Employers' liability (optional): covers a claim from an employee injured at work, with a limit of €13 million per claim and €13 million per year.
Third-party objects and sites (optional): covers damage to equipment or premises belonging to others in your care, such as a studio or hall you rent by the hour, up to €5,000 per claim.

Which cover do you need?
Most dance teachers are exposed to both. One covers injury and damage, the other financial loss from your work. You can combine them in one Insify policy. Cover limits, excess and exclusions apply. See your policy documents.
Public Liability insurance
Covers claims when your work injures someone or damages something that belongs to them. For example, someone trips over your equipment, or you damage a floor while working at a client's premises.
- Choose your cover: from €1.25 million up to €6.5 million per claim, and up to twice that per insurance year
- Excess from €0, depending on your turnover
- Staff? Add optional Employers' Liability with €13 million cover per claim

- Excess from €0, depending on your turnover

How to choose the right insurance as a dance teacher?
Criteria to compare:
The cover offered: Check that the policy matches the real risks of your work: injuries during class, accidents linked to the way you progress a student, and damage you might cause to the equipment or spaces you use. Make sure every style you teach is covered.
The price: Compare premiums, but prioritise cover that fits dance teaching. An attractive price can hide exclusions that matter for your activity.
The excess: Find out what stays at your own expense when a claim happens, whether it is an incident with a student or damage at a hall you hire.
The exclusions: Watch out for exclusions specific to dance and movement teaching: undeclared styles, missing qualifications, higher-risk work such as aerial or acrobatic classes, putting on a show as the organiser, and marketing that promises guaranteed results.
The service: An accident can happen at any moment. Choose an insurer that is easy to reach and understands how classes actually run. At Insify, our online support team knows the specifics of your work.
Mistakes to avoid: Don't settle for a generic policy that ignores the risks of teaching movement. Make sure your liability is properly covered, whatever the style and wherever you teach. To secure your business today, discover our public liability and professional indemnity insurance.

Answers to your questions about our insurance for dance teachers
The price depends on your turnover, the activities you declare, your headcount, and the cover limit and excess you choose. At Insify, public liability for a dance teacher starts from €7.55 per month, and professional indemnity from €10.80 per month. A personalised quote takes a few minutes online. You can adjust the cover limit and the excess to see how each one moves your premium before you commit.
Public liability isn't required by law in Ireland. In practice, the people who give you space insist on it. Studios, schools and community halls ask for proof before they'll let you teach. Local authorities ask when you hire a hall, and festival organisers and public tenders often set a minimum limit. Without cover, a claim for an injury in class, or for damage to someone else's property, falls on you personally. For most dance teachers it's the baseline that makes bookings possible at all.
It depends on how much of your work is advice and deliverables rather than the class itself. Public liability deals with injury and physical damage. Professional indemnity deals with the purely financial loss a client suffers because of a mistake in your professional work, such as advice they relied on that turned out to be wrong. If your income is mainly teaching in person, public liability is the cover that fits, and professional indemnity can be added alongside it. Note that promising or guaranteed results is excluded, so keep any claims in your marketing realistic.
Yes. Your cover follows the activities you declare when you apply rather than one fixed address, so classes in a hired studio, a community hall, a school or a client's own space can all be covered. Describe every way you work at sign-up: the venues, the styles you teach and whether the public or parents are present. If you damage the hall's own equipment or fittings, that is the optional third-party objects and sites cover rather than public liability, up to €5,000 per claim.
Teaching a class in a hired room is your insured activity. Organising an event is excluded, so putting on a recital, a showcase or a public performance as the organiser is not covered. This matters because end-of-year shows are a normal part of a dance school's calendar, and the exclusion applies regardless of the size of the event.
The excess is the part of a claim you pay yourself before the rest is paid out. For example, if a claim settles at €4,000 and your excess is €250, you pay the first €250 and Insify pays the remaining €3,750. The options are €0, €250, €500, €1,000 and €2,500, with €0 and €250 available up to €500,000 annual revenue. Above that the minimum is €500. A higher excess usually lowers your monthly premium but costs you more when a claim happens, so it is a trade-off rather than a right answer.
No. Insify's cover in Ireland is liability cover: it protects you against injury and damage you cause to other people, and against the financial loss a client suffers from a professional mistake. It does not cover your own sound system, costumes, mirrors or premises against theft or damage. You can add third-party objects and sites cover for damage to equipment or premises belonging to others that are in your care, up to €5,000 per claim. For your own property you would need a separate arrangement.
Yes. If you employ anyone, including assistant teachers, accompanists and paid helpers, employers' liability can be added to your policy, with a limit of €13 million per claim and €13 million per year. It covers a claim from a member of staff who is injured or made ill by their work for you.
