Why business insurance is essential in wellness and sport
Everyday risks you should not underestimate
Working closely with people's bodies exposes your business to particular risks. From a technical treatment in a nail salon to a consultation with a naturopath, these activities share common exposures:
Client injuries: during treatments, massages or training sessions
Allergic reactions: to products you use (creams, lotions, polishes, hair colour)
Accidents on your premises: slips, trips and burns
Damage you accidentally cause: to clients or their property
Cover built for your profession
Public liability insurance protects your business when you accidentally injure a client or other third party, or damage their property, in the course of your work. If your profession involves advice or guidance (sports coaching, naturopathy), professional indemnity insurance covers financial loss caused by a professional error.

What is Public Liability insurance?
How does public liability work? If a third party, like a client or a member of the public, holds you responsible for an injury or for damage to their property, public liability insurance takes care of your defence costs and any compensation due.
What does it cover? Injury or property damage caused to others in the course of your work. You choose a cover limit of €1.25 million, €2.5 million or €6.5 million per claim. Optional covers can be added: Employers' Liability (€13 million per claim) if you have staff, and Third-party objects and sites for damage to equipment or premises of others in your care (up to €5,000 per claim).
Cover that fits your profession. You describe your activities fully at sign-up, and your cover matches what you actually do: hands-on treatments, salon services, massage, one-to-one and group training or wellness consultations.
Is it mandatory? Public liability isn't required by law in Ireland. However, many venues, gyms, landlords and clients require proof of cover before you can work with them. With Insify, cover starts from €7.55 per month.
Who needs it? Any wellness or sport professional who works with clients in person: in a salon or studio, at a gym, outdoors, or at a client's home.

What is Professional Indemnity insurance?
Professional indemnity covers the purely financial loss a client suffers because of a professional mistake you made: wrong advice, a miscalculation, a missed detail, or an error in something you delivered. It doesn't cover injury or damage to property (that's public liability).
What counts as a professional mistake? Advice that turns out to be wrong, an error in a plan, programme or recommendation a client relied on, or an assessment that costs your client money.
Who is it for? People whose work is advice, expertise or deliverables rather than hands-on work. In wellness and sport that mostly means advice-led professions like sports coaches and naturopaths: the plans, programmes and guidance your clients pay for.
How does the cover respond? It's written on a claims-made basis: the claim must be made and reported to us while your policy runs.
Switching to us from another insurer? Work from up to 5 years back is covered, provided your previous policy would have covered the claim.
Leaving? Claims about work done while you were insured must be reported before your policy ends, unless run-off cover is arranged.
Cover that fits your profession. You select your activities when you apply, so the policy and its exclusions match what you actually advise on and deliver. You also choose a cover limit from €125,000 up to €1.25 million per claim, and up to twice that per insurance year; cover starts from €10.80 per month.

Which cover do you need?
Most businesses are exposed to both. One covers injury and damage, the other financial loss from your work. You can combine them in one Insify policy. Cover limits, excess and exclusions apply. See the policy wording.
Public Liability insurance
Covers claims when your work injures someone or damages something that belongs to them. For example, someone trips over your equipment, or you damage a floor while working at a client's premises.
- Choose your cover: from €1.25 million up to €6.5 million per claim, and up to twice that per insurance year
- Excess from €0, depending on your turnover
- Staff? Add optional Employers' Liability with €13 million cover per claim
- Most relevant when your work brings you into contact with clients, the public, their premises or their belongings
Professional Indemnity insurance

Frequently Asked Questions
Public Liability covers injury or damage you accidentally cause to clients and other third parties: a client slips on a wet floor, or a treatment causes a burn. Professional Indemnity covers purely financial loss caused by your professional advice or services, which matters most for professions that guide or advise clients, such as sports coaches and naturopaths. For hands-on professions like hairdressing and nail styling, Public Liability is the essential cover, since your main risks involve clients on your premises and the products you use. If you're unsure, describe your activity at sign-up and you'll be guided to the cover that fits.
Public liability insurance isn't required by law in Ireland. In practice, however, it is often required by clients, venues, landlords and local authorities before you can rent a chair, hire a studio or run sessions in a gym or public space. Professional indemnity is generally optional too, though some regulators and professional bodies require it. So while the law may not force you to insure, the market you work in usually will.
Injuries during treatments and training sessions are among the most common claims in wellness and sport. If a client is injured and holds your business responsible, Public Liability cover responds to the claim where you are found legally liable. Report the incident as soon as possible so the claim can be handled quickly. Good records (what happened, when, who witnessed it) make the process far smoother.
Yes, this is one of the core risks addressed for beauty and wellness professionals. If a client suffers an allergic reaction or skin damage traced to a product you applied, and your business is legally liable, the cover responds to compensation claims. Patch testing and careful product records remain your first line of defence, but even careful professionals face claims. Describe your activity and the products you work with fully at sign-up so your cover matches what you actually do.
Yes. Your premium and cover are based on your business's real profile: the actual premium depends on your activity, turnover, cover amount and excess. That means a self-employed mobile hairdresser is not priced like a large salon with staff. Declare your turnover accurately at sign-up so your cover matches reality, and review it as your business grows.
Public Liability cover starts from €7.55 per month. The actual premium depends on your activity, turnover, cover amount and excess, so a nail technician and a wellness centre will not pay the same. You see your price online in minutes, with no obligation. Start a quote, describe your activity fully, and compare options to fit your budget.
