Why take out business insurance as a photographer

Photography puts your liability on the line on every shoot. Here is why dedicated photographer insurance matters:

  • You damage a venue or a client's property. A stand into the wall of a hotel function room, or a mark on a studio floor.

  • Someone is hurt around your kit. Stands, cables, and lighting on a wedding floor or a studio set.

  • A file never arrives, or arrives corrupted. Nobody is hurt, and nothing is broken, but the client is out of pocket.

What is Public Liability insurance?

If a third party, like a client or a member of the public, holds you responsible for an injury or for damage to their property, public liability insurance takes care of your defence costs and any compensation due.

What does it cover?

Injury or property damage caused to others in the course of your photography work. You choose a cover limit of €1.25 million, €2.5 million or €6.5 million per claim, and up to twice that per insurance year. Employers' liability (€13 million per claim) can be added if you have staff.

Cover that fits your profession

You describe your activities fully at sign-up, and your cover matches what you actually do: studio work, on-location shoots, weddings, events and commercial photography.

Is it mandatory?

Public liability isn't required by law in Ireland. However, many wedding venues, hotels, corporate clients and event organisers require proof of cover before you can shoot on their premises. Cover starts from €7.55 per month.

Who needs it?

Any photographer working with people in person: in a studio, on location, or at a client's venue.

If there's a chance a client could hold you liable for purely financial loss, it's worth also considering Professional Indemnity cover.

What is Professional Indemnity insurance?

Professional indemnity covers the purely financial loss a client suffers because of a mistake in your professional work: wrong advice, a miscalculation, a missed detail, or an error in something you delivered. It doesn't cover injury or damage to property (that's Public Liability); it's specifically about the financial damage your client suffers because of your work.

What counts as a professional mistake?

Unusable shots, files lost before delivery, a brief that was not met, or material used without the licence it needed.

Who is it for?

People whose work is advice, expertise, or deliverables rather than physical work, photographers and videographers among them.

How does the cover respond?

It's written on a claims-made basis: the claim must be made and reported to us while your policy runs.

Switching to us from another insurer?

Work from up to 5 years back is covered, provided your previous policy would have covered the claim.

Cover that fits your profession.

You select your activities when you apply, so the policy and its exclusions match what you actually shoot and deliver. Get your cover from €10.80 per month with Insify.

Which cover do you need?

Most photographers are exposed to both. One covers injury and damage, the other financial loss from your work. You can combine them in one Insify policy. Cover limits, excess and exclusions apply. See the policy wording.

For injury and property damage

Public Liability insurance

Covers claims when your work injures someone or damages something that belongs to them. For example, someone trips over your equipment, or you damage a floor while working at a client's premises.

  • Choose your cover: from €1.25 million up to €6.5 million per claim, and up to twice that per insurance year
  • Excess from €0, depending on your turnover
  • Staff? Add optional Employers' Liability with €13 million cover per claim

For financial loss

Professional Indemnity insurance

Covers purely financial loss a client suffers through a professional mistake, oversight or wrong advice, with no injury or property damage involved. Think of work a client claims was unfit for purpose and cost them money.

  • Choose your cover: from €125,000 up to €1.25 million per claim, and up to twice that per insurance year
  • Excess from €0, depending on your turnover
  • Most relevant when clients pay you for advice, programmes and plans

How to choose the right insurance as a photographer

Criteria to compare:

  • The cover offered: match it to the real risks of the work, from studio sessions and on-location shoots to weddings, corporate events and video. The damage that matters here is injury to other people and damage to property belonging to others, so every discipline you actually take on should be declared.

  • The price: compare premiums, but an attractive price can hide exclusions that matter to a photographer.

  • The excess: know what stays at your own expense when a claim happens.

  • The exclusions: watch for activities you have not declared, restrictions on the kind of photography a policy will accept, and marketing that promises guaranteed results.

  • The service: check how you reach the insurer when a claim happens, what the response times are, and whether the cover is explained in plain terms before you commit.

Mistakes to avoid: a generic policy written for any small business will not follow you onto a wedding floor or into a client's brief. To secure your business today, discover our Public Liability and Professional Indemnity cover.

Answers to your questions about photographer insurance in Ireland

How much does photographer insurance cost in Ireland?

Public Liability starts from €7.55 per month and Professional Indemnity from €10.80 per month. What you pay depends on the activities you declare, your turnover, the cover amount you choose and the excess you accept. A photographer working alone on portrait and wedding work sits at a different premium from a studio with staff and commercial clients. Running a quote online takes a couple of minutes and commits you to nothing, so it is the quickest way to see your own figure.

Is public liability insurance mandatory for photographers in Ireland?

No, Public Liability is not legally mandatory in Ireland for photographers. In practice it is often required anyway: venues, wedding and event organisers, local authorities and commercial clients regularly make it a condition of letting you work, and some will ask for evidence of cover before they confirm a booking.

Does Professional Indemnity cover photo files that are lost or unusable?

That is exactly the kind of claim Professional Indemnity is written for: the client suffers purely financial loss because of a mistake in your professional work, with no injury and no damage to anyone's property.

What is an excess and how does it work?

The excess is the part of a claim you carry yourself. If your turnover is €500,000 or less you can choose €0, €250, €500 (the default), €1,000 or €2,500; above that the options are €500, €1,000 (the default) or €2,500. Worked through: on a €3,000 claim with a €500 excess, you pay the first €500 and the policy pays the remaining €2,500. A higher excess lowers your premium and raises what you fund yourself on a small claim, which is the trade-off to weigh.

Am I covered for shoots at weddings and other events?

Yes, provided you declare the work when you apply. Site visits such as wedding receptions are part of the insured activity, as is organising and running company events, seminars or training courses, and taking photos or video for individuals at weddings and parties.
